Dear Students,
Welcome to the class blog for FS 102 Vision, Imagination, Activism!
Through this class we will explore how vision, imagination and direct action activism inform our understanding of contemporary culture and transforming the future. We will explore the qualities of visionary leaders and 20th and 21st century artist-activists and social/civil rights-activists, and their role in contemporary life and art.
The following questions will be relevant to our work this semester.
- What does it mean to have a vision? How does one ‘get’ a vision?
- What is activism?
- How are vision, imagination and activism related?
- What qualities are associated with visionary leaders?
- What are the BIG challenges --or, “ill-defined problems”-- we face as a world?
- What motivates you as you envision the future?
- What is your personal vision for the future of our world?
- What is the purpose of education?
- What is our responsibility as citizens in a democratic society?
While these topics will provide a conceptual focus for our class, our primary goal will be engagement through speaking, writing and other activist strategies that require excellence in communication skills. In addition we will participate in an off-campus field trip (Carnegie International), attend relevant campus lectures and hopefully co-design and implement a direct action project.
